The Deep East Texas Council of Governments, commonly known as DETCOG, is a significant political subdivision of Texas and a federally chartered Economic Development District established to enhance regional cooperation among local governments. Founded with the purpose of facilitating planning efforts and promoting efficiency within the extensive 12-county area that includes Angelina, Houston, Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity, and Tyler counties, DETCOG serves over 339000 residents scattered across an impressive land area of 9413 square miles. This expansive region is larger than several northeastern states combined and reflects the unique challenges faced by rural areas in Texas.
